Not all children manage school without help and for many parents it is not possible to support their children. No money for private lessons, a low educational level of parents, lack of knowledge of German and/or cramped living conditions are just some of the reasons that make it impossible for students to achieve the desired learning outcomes. Against this backdrop, Caritas has launched the “Lerncafés”, a free learning and afternoon care service. The Caritas learning cafés support children from six to 15 years in learning. In addition to giving assistance with homework and preparation for tests, it comes to strengthen the German language skills of children and to convey the joy of learning. A healthy snack and regular contact with their parents are also very important in the learning cafés.
In 2010 the Caritas “Lerncafé” was accepted as “best practice” example on the European Web Site on Integration. In the balance sheet in 2015 to implement the proposals of the Independent Expert Council for Integration, Caritas learning cafés are cited as a valuable way to improve German language skills of children and adolescents. The first Caritas learning café opened in autumn 2007 in Graz, meanwhile, they are all over Austria. The project is supported by the Austrian Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs as well as the private sector.

You want to know more about the Caritas “Lerncafé”, speak with project staff and visit a site? Then we warmly invite you to sign up for a guided tour.
